1. phase alternation line A colour-television system developed in Germany and used in most European countries until digital conversion in the 2000s. The chrominance (colour information) signal is resolved into two components in quadrature that are used for amplitude modulation of the chrominance subcarriers. In the PAL system the relative phase of the quadrature components is reversed on alternate lines in order to minimize phase errors. Compare SECAM.
2. programmable array logic A logic device that has a number of input variables that are programmable to inputs of AND gates, the outputs of the AND gates forming fixed inputs to an OR gate whose output is the output of the PAL (see diagram).
