The phenomenon in which a region of a star in which convection currents would not normally occur is penetrated by convection currents ‘overshooting’ from underlying or overlying regions. Such overshooting may be important in transporting heavy elements, synthesized within the star, into regions they would not otherwise reach. Evidence of convective overshoot in the Sun is found in the granulated appearance of its surface.
