A type of solar active prominence in which material ascends to heights of 100 000 km or more and then descends along the same trajectory. Maximum velocities are about 200 km/s and typical durations are 10–20 minutes. They often recur in identical locations, and the more active ones occur at the onset of flares. The brightest surges last for half an hour or more.
