NASA spacecraft being developed for travel to and from Mars or asteroids in the asteroid belt. The three-stage craft has an upper launch abort system, a middle crew module where the astronauts will live, and a lower service module that holds the power and propulsion systems. Solar panels on the service module will provide enough electricity to allow the craft to remain in orbit for months at a time. Orion had its first flight test on 5 December 2014 (without a crew), which was a success. The craft launched from Florida on a Delta IV Heavy rocket and flew two orbits around Earth. The flight lasted 4.5 hours. Orion reached an altitude of 5 800 km (15 times higher than the International Space Station) before it returned to Earth, splashing down safely in the Pacific Ocean where it was retrieved.
