单词 culture
释义
culture

Biology
  • A batch of cells, which can be microorganisms or of animal or plant origin, that are grown under specific conditions of nutrient levels, temperature, pH, oxygen levels, osmotic factors, light, pressure, and water content. Cultures of cells are prepared in the laboratory for a wide spectrum of scientific research. A culture medium provides the appropriate conditions for growth. See also batch culture; continuous culture; monolayer culture; organ culture; suspension culture; tissue culture.

Geography
  • ‘The stuff of culture [is] meaning, symbols, signification’ argues Barnes (2003) Urb. Geog. 24, 6, but J. Anderson (2009) is kinder to the student: ‘culture is what people do. Different cultures are produced when individuals get together to live their lives differently’. In a study of MTV, Rosati (2007) TIBG 32, 4 argues that ‘cultural forms—and the authority of their production—are always implicated in a wider field of struggle over how the practice and meaning of daily life will be organised and in whose interests’. ‘Popular culture…is one of the ways in which people come to understand their position both within a larger collective identity and within an even broader geopolitical narrative’ (Dittmer (2005) AAAG 95, 3). Brons (2006) Tijdschrift 97, 5 sees culture as a ‘map for behaviour’. See Hedberg and Kepsu (2003) Geografiska B 85, 2 on migration to Sweden as an expression of culture.

Philosophy
  • The way of life of a people, including their attitudes, values, beliefs, arts, sciences, modes of perception, and habits of thought and activity. Cultural features of forms of life are learned but are often too pervasive to be readily noticed from within.
