A joint French–ESA satellite, launched in 2006 December to search for exoplanets and to study the internal structure of stars; the name stands for Convection, Rotation and planetary Transits. CoRoT observed over 100 000 stars with a 0.27-m telescope in search of dips in brightness caused by the transit of planets, and also recorded even smaller brightness changes caused by oscillations of their surface (asteroseismology). Observations ceased in 2012 November.
