A proposed system consisting of three satellites in orbit around the sun which it is hoped will detect gravitational waves. Like other methods proposed for the direct detection of gravitational waves, such as LIGO, LISA is based on laser interferometers. However, LISA is designed to capture a different range of frequencies of gravitational waves compared with LIGO, corresponding to different astrophysical phenomena.
