A medium to large, predominantly black, aquatic bird with a long neck and body and broad wings, found in coastal waters worldwide, some species inhabiting inland lakes. It feeds on fish, which it catches by diving and pursuing underwater. After fishing, a cormorant goes ashore where it often holds its wings outspread, apparently to dry the plumage. There are about 40 species in the family Phalacrocoracidae.
