A fine-grained or glassy carapace found around crystalline magma bodies. The fine grain size is produced by the rapid loss of heat from the external surface of the magma body, causing severe undercooling of the magma which generates many crystal-nucleation sites producing small crystals, or suppression of nucleation sites altogether, producing glass.
