A motor vehicle with two or three wheels in which the rider sits on a saddle astride the frame and engine, with feet supported by footrests, and steers by means of handlebars. Many motorcycles have an extended saddle (pillion) to accommodate a passenger seated behind the rider and some have a sidecar, which is an unpowered, one-wheeled vehicle fixed to the motorcycle frame that carries one passenger with space for luggage, or tools or other equipment; a sidecar may have a removable top to provide weather protection. Motorcycles are used for everyday transport such as commuting, long-distance journeys, and sport including off-road events. If the rider’s feet rest on a platform extending across the vehicle the motorcycle is usually known as a scooter. A small, low-powered motorcycle that travels slowly and may be powered by pedals and chain augmented by an engine is called a moped. The first motorcycle was built in Germany in 1885 by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach.
