He was the youngest son of Louis the German. He inherited Swabia and acquired both east and west Frankish kingdoms by 884 after his older brothers died. He was unsuccessful in repelling Saracen invaders and was obliged to buy a respite from attacks by the Vikings and so was deposed in 887. His death marked the end of the Carolingian monopoly of kingship over the Franks.
