A graduate of Moscow U in 1916, he soon joined the faculty. He was elected to the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1939. His 1943 book on the mathematical principles of statistical mechanics provided the first coherent mathematical treatment of the subject. His statement of the law of the iterated logarithm appeared in 1924.
