A device used to check a cable to ensure that there is no break in any of its wires. It is connected to both ends, and a small voltage is fed through a resistor to drive a current down the wire; an ammeter is then used to measure any resulting current. Typically, a simple audible or visual signal is given if such a current can be detected. See cable tester.
