The scene of a decisive victory in World War I by the Italians over the Austrians. A town in north-east Italy, it is named after Victor Emmanuel II, in whose reign Venetia was regained from Austria after the Six Weeks War (1866). Italian forces under General Diaz avenged the Caporetto disaster (1917) by routing the Austro-Hungarian army, which resulted in an Austrian request for an armistice.
