Any of various naturally occurring, tissue-specific inhibitors of mitosis. They are oligopeptides and typically act at very low concentrations in a reversible and nontoxic manner. Experimentally they can induce transient inhibition of cell proliferation in certain cancers and may have therapeutic potential.
