A radio telescope with a diameter of 500 m opened in 2016 in Guizhou province, southwest China, owned and operated by the National Astronomical Observatories of China. It consists of a single dish suspended in a natural hollow in the ground, similar to the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico. Its reflector consists of 4450 triangular segments which are adjusted to form a parabolic surface. FAST observes at wavelengths from 100 mm to 4.3 m. A movable receiver allows the telescope to observe and track objects up to 40° from the zenith. The usable aperture at any one time is 300 m.
