The world’s leading astronomical data centre, based at the Observatoire de Strasbourg, France; the name is French for Strasbourg Astronomical Data Center. It was founded in 1972 as the Centre de Données Stellaires (Centre for Stellar Data), and was renamed in 1983 when it was expanded to cover all objects outside the Solar System, not just stars. CDS collects data from ground-based and space observatories, and makes them available in electronic form. CDS operates the SIMBAD database.
