单词 monochromator
释义
monochromator

Physics
  • A device that provides monochromatic radiation from a polychromatic source. In the case of visible radiation, for example, a prism can be used together with slits to select a small range of wavelengths.

Astronomy
  • A device for selecting a very narrow range of wavelengths of light. It can be a spectrograph in which incoming light is dispersed by a diffraction grating, and a small part of the resulting spectrum selected by passing it through a narrow exit slit. Alternatively, it can be an interference filter that allows only a narrow band of wavelengths to pass.

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • In reflected-light microscopy, an accessory used to observe the optical properties of minerals with incident light of a specific wavelength. Fixed monochromatic interference filters with a band width of 15–50 nm and continuous-spectrum monochromators are available. They are used primarily for reflectance measurements at specific wavelengths, normally 546 to 589 nm.
