Popular name for the Catalogue of Galaxies and of Clusters of Galaxies published in six volumes in 1961–8 by F. Zwicky and his collaborators. It contains 31 350 galaxies and 9700 clusters recorded on the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey photographs. Its system of classifying clusters as compact, medium compact, or open is still used.
