Steep-sided, enclosed depression in a limestone region. It is normally located at a site of increased joint density, which focuses drainage passing vertically through the rock. It enlarges by solution (carbonation) and by collapse, thus allowing so-called solution dolines to be distinguished from collapse dolines. A shaft may lead from its floor to a cave system.
