单词 Vichy government (1940–45)
释义
Vichy government (1940–45)

World History
  • The pro-German French puppet government established after the Franco-German armistice in World War II. The Germans having occupied Paris, it was set up under Marshal Pétain in Vichy by the French National Assembly (1940) to administer unoccupied France and the colonies. Having dissolved the Third Republic, it issued a new constitution establishing an autocratic state. The Vichy government was never recognized by the Allies. In 1941 it granted Japan right of access and air bases in Indo-China, from which it was to launch its Malaya and Burma campaigns. It was dominated first by Laval, as Pétain’s deputy (1940), then by Darlan (1941–42) in collaboration with Hitler, and once more (1942–44) by Laval as Pétain’s successor after German forces moved in to the unoccupied portions of France. After the Allied liberation of France (1944), the Vichy government established itself under Pétain at Sigmaringen in Germany, where it collapsed when Germany surrendered in 1945 and France was reunited.
