An arthropod (class Chilopoda) that has a long, segmented body bearing one pair of legs on each segment, but always with an odd number of pairs, so although centipedes have many legs, no centipede has precisely 100. About 3000 species are known, distributed worldwide, but there are likely many more. They live in moist places and are predators of smaller animals.
