A Swiss alpine geologist, Heim did important work concerned with the theory of mountain building, and on the formation of overthrusts and nappes in the Alps. He supported the idea of a contracting Earth. He also studied the mechanics of rock deformation, proposing that rocks can deform plastically under pressure and that the same pressure causes metamorphism.
