单词 celestial mechanics
释义
celestial mechanics

Physics
  • The study of the motions of and forces between the celestial bodies. It is based on Newton’s laws of motion and Newton’s law of gravitation. Refinements based on the special and general theories of relativity are also included, although the differences between the Newtonian theories and the relativistic theories are only important in a few cases.

Astronomy
  • The branch of astronomy that deals with the motions of bodies in orbit, such as planets, natural and artificial satellites, space probes, comets, and binary or multiple stars. The forces involved are gravitation and, for some artificial satellites, atmospheric drag and radiation pressure from sunlight. Although in most cases the orbit of a body is nominally elliptical and subject to Kepler’s laws, the attraction of other bodies and the presence of other forces will cause small departures, known as perturbations, from the elliptical form. See also n-body problem; three-body problem.

Space Exploration
  • The branch of astronomy that calculates the orbits of celestial bodies and their gravitational attractions, and the orbits of artificial satellites and space probes. A spacecraft approaching a planet can use radio science to measure its own acceleration caused by the planet's gravity. This can be translated into a measurement of the planet's mass and, if images are available, its density.
