The great-grandson of Cato the Elder. He was known posthumously as ‘Uticensis’ after the place of his death. A conservative republican, he long opposed Pompey, but finally sided with him against Julius Caesar. He committed suicide at Utica in northern Africa after Caesar’s victory at Thapsus, rather than seek Caesar’s pardon.
