The increased sensitivity of the eye to light in dark conditions. It results from chemical changes within the eye, and takes at least 20 min to complete. Dark adaptation is reversed when the eye is again exposed to bright light, completely in the case of blue or violet light but only partially in the case of red light. It is for this reason that visual observers use dim red lights for examining charts, etc.
