A curve formed when a chain or rope of uniform density hangs from two fixed points. If the lowest point on the curve passes through the origin, the equation is y=c(coshx/c), where c is the distance between the x-axis and the directrix.
The curve in which a flexible heavy uniform chain between two points. With suitable axes, the equation of the curve is y = ccosh(x/c) (see hyperbolic function).
