The procedure used to determine the route taken by a packet in a packet switching computer network. Routing may be fixed (computed once at system starting or session initiation) or dynamic (recomputed periodically or on a packet-by-packet basis). Routing may be centralized or distributed (computed by different nodes independently).
Internet
When packets of data are sent from one computer to another on a network, individual computers in the network have to decide the path the data should take via a number of intermediate computers. This is known as routing.
Electronics and Electrical Engineering
In telephone or digital communication systems, the assigning of a communication path along which a call or message will pass from its source to its destination. See alsoalternative routing.
