A process used to produce synthetic gemstones that was developed in 1902 by French chemist Auguste Victor Louis Verneuil (1856–1913). It involves melting finely powdered materials using an oxy-hydrogen flame and crystallizing the droplets on a seed crystal. It is used to make ruby, sapphire, and forms of corundum.
