A nonmetal, atomic number 6, that exists in two allotropic crystalline forms: diamond and graphite. In diamond form the resistivity (5 × 1014 ohm cm) falls within the range of insulators. In graphite form it is a poor conductor, resistivity about 1.4 × 10−3 ohm cm, and in granular form exhibits a variation of resistance with pressure.
In graphite form it is used to form resistors, in microphones, and as a filament of electric lights.
