  • An identical pair of NASA satellites launched in 2012 August to study the Earth’s radiation belts, commonly known as the Van Allen Belts. They each carry five instruments to measure the atomic particles and magnetic fields within the belts. Both spacecraft follow the same highly elliptical orbit, ranging from 500 km to 30 600 km from Earth, passing through the entire belts.

  • A NASA mission, formerly known as the Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP) Mission, to study Earth’s radiation belts in order to explore the Sun’s influence on Earth and near-space. The two identical satellites were launched on 30 August 2012, from Cape Canaveral, into near-equatorial, highly elliptical orbit with a perigee at about 620 km and apogee at about 30 500 km (= about 5.8 Earth radii), inclination 10°.
