He is remembered for his account of scientific theories, arguing that as well as theoretical postulates and principles connecting them with empirical laws, theories require models or analogies, for example in mechanical terms, without which they would remain mere formalisms, offering no understanding of their subject matter. His major work was Physics: the Elements (1920).
