(16 August 1780) A battle of the American War of Independence in which some 2000 American militiamen under Horatio Gates were defeated when attacked by Cornwallis’s army 193 km (120 miles) north-north-west of Charleston, South Carolina. Gates was replaced by Nathanael Greene as commander of the Southern Army, which revenged itself at the Battle of King’s Mountain in October that year.
