A chemical reaction that occurs at the same time as a main reaction but to a lesser extent, thus leading to other products mixed with the main products.

Chemical Engineering

A chemical reaction that takes place at the same time as a main reaction and produces unwanted products and therefore reduces the yield of the desired product. For example, in the high-temperature cracking reaction of propane to produce propene (propylene) $C_{3} H_{8} \to C_{3} H_{6} + H_{2}$ , some of the hydrogen can react with the propane to produce methane and ethane as a side reaction $C_{3} H_{8} + H_{2} \to C H_{4} + C_{2} H_{6}$ . The conditions of the reaction must therefore be controlled to reduce this unwanted reaction.
