单词 side-looking airborne radar
释义
side-looking airborne radar

Electronics and Electrical Engineering
  • A radar mounted on an aircraft so that it looks sideways (left or right), rather than straight ahead or behind. It is typically also angled downwards so that it scans the ground off to one side. SLAR has the advantage of working through clouds, and its main application is ground surveying. See also synthetic aperture radar.

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • An airborne radar system which scans sideways from the flight track and detects the backscattered radar reflections from the ground surface in order to produce a radar image of the ground much as side-scan sonar produces an image of the sea floor. Since different surface materials have different radar reflectance characteristics the radar image can be interpreted in terms of surface features.
