The production of methane by microbes called methanogens. This occurs in anoxic conditions and is an anaerobic process. Methanogenesis accounts for a substantial amount of natural gas. It is thought that the main chemical reactions involve (1) carbon dioxide, and (2) ethanoic acid:

with the second reaction dominating. Methanogenesis is a process in the carbon cycle.
