A small insect, resembling a moth, that has freshwater aquatic larvae found in clean, flowing water; their presence indicates high water quality. Larvae of many species use silk excreted from salivary glands to construct a protective net, or a case made from small particles. There are about 7000 species, comprising the order Trichoptera, found on all continents.
