A male peafowl (the female is a peahen) that is renowned for its loud, raucous call, its iridescent blue and green plumage, and its long tail, called a train, with many eyespots. The train is spread during the peacock’s courtship display, its extravagant size resulting from sexual selection. There are three species in the family Phasianidae, the Indian peafowl (Pavo cristatus), which is the national bird of India, the green peafowl (P. muticus), found in the tropical rainforests of South East Asia, and the Congo peafowl (Afropavo congenis) of the Congo Basin.
