The principle proposed by James Hutton and paraphrased succinctly as ‘the present is the key to the past’, i.e. that the formations and structures we see today were produced by processes identical to those operating now. This is a considerable oversimplification, since processes that occurred in historical times may not be occurring now, or may not be observable now, and vice versa.
