Brongniart was professor of mineralogy in the Paris Museum of Natural History, and collaborated with Cuvier in his work on the mapping of the Paris basin. He demonstrated that lower taxonomic orders of animals were found lower in the stratigraphic column, claiming this gave evidence of progression in the succession of life.
