Born in Ukraine, she emigrated to the USA in 1907 and in 1921 moved to Palestine, where she became active in the Labour movement. Following Israel’s independence she served in ministerial posts (1949–66); having left government in 1966 to build up the Labour Party from disparate socialist factions, she was elected Prime Minister in 1969, retaining her position through coalition rule until her retirement in 1974.
