When, at the direction of the Land League, Irish tenants on the estate of Lord Erne in County Mayo asked for rent reductions and refused to pay their full rents, Boycott ordered their eviction (1880). Parnell urged everyone to refuse all communication with Boycott and to ostracize his family. The policy was successful and Boycott was forced to leave. The practice of non-communication became known as boycotting.
