A long-period comet discovered on 2006 August 7 by the Scottish-born Australian astronomer Robert Houston McNaught (1956– ). It reached perihelion, 0.17 au, on 2007 January 12 and was at its brightest a day or so later when it was estimated to be magnitude −5 or −6. The comet was prominently visible from the southern hemisphere and was noted for its broad, streaked dust tail, similar to that of Comet West in 1976, which stretched for up to 35°. Its orbit has an eccentricity slightly greater than 1.0, making it hyperbolic; hence it may never return.
