单词 desalination
释义
desalination

Chemistry
  • The removal of salt from sea water for irrigation of the land or to provide drinking water. The process is normally only economic if a cheap source of energy, such as the waste heat from a nuclear power station, can be used. Desalination using solar energy has the greatest economic potential since shortage of fresh water is most acute in hot regions. The methods employed include evaporation, often under reduced pressure (flash evaporation); freezing (pure ice forms from freezing brine); reverse osmosis; electrodialysis; and ion exchange.

Chemical Engineering
  • The removal of salt from seawater used to provide potable water for drinking or irrigation purposes. Desalination is only used where there is a cheap source of energy and where there is a distinct shortage of fresh water. Desalination methods used include reduced pressure evaporation, freezing, reverse osmosis, electrodialysis, and ion exchange.

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • A series of processes whereby salt water is rendered potable.

Geography
  • The removal of dissolved salts and minerals from saline water to produce fresh, drinkable water. Commercial desalination processes include: reverse osmosis, electrodialysis, multieffect distillation, and vapour compression. The key issues associated with desalination are cost, energy use, and the environmental impacts of brine disposal and feedwater intake (Trimble et al. (2005) Encyc. Water Sci.).
