A consumer version of the original analogue Dolby film sound format. Four channels of audio information are encoded onto two audio tracks suitable for use on, for example, videotapes and TV broadcasts. The four channels comprise the front-left, centre, front-right, and rear surround channels. The two tracks can be decoded to recreate the original four channels, giving a more balanced listening environment. The main sounds are derived from the front-left and front-right channels, the dialogue derives from a centre ‘phantom’ channel utilizing the left and right, and the effects or ambience information appears from behind the listener.
