Four quantities used to describe the polarization properties of an electromagnetic wave: the total intensity, I; the circular polarization, V; and the components of linear polarization, Q and U. In radio astronomy, the Stokes parameters are normally measured in janskys. They are named after the British mathematician and physicist George Gabriel Stokes (1819–1903).
