Typically, 100 golden guineas were randomly sampled and placed in a ceremonial box (the Pyx), which was then weighed. The Master of the Mint was responsible for the standard of the coinage. He was subject to severe penalties if the combined weight of the coins differed from its nominal weight by more than one part in 400.
