Dimensionless number denoting the ratio between the number of streams of one order (see stream order) and those of the next-higher order in a drainage network. It may be a useful measure of proneness to flooding: the higher the bifurcation ratio, the greater the probability of flooding.
Bifurcation ratio
In a drainage basin, the ratio of the number of streams of a given order to the number of streams of the next, higher order. ‘In general, small streams are tributaries of the next bigger stream in such a way that flow architecture develops from the lowest scale to the highest scale’ (Reis (2006) Geomorph. 78, 3–4).
