specializing in semi-parametric models. Bickel was educated at UCB, gaining his PhD (supervised by Lehmann) in 1963 and joining the faculty. He was the 1979 COPSS President’s Award winner and its 2013 Fisher Lecturer. President of the IMS in 1981, he was its Wald Lecturer in 1980 and its Rietz Lecturer in 2004. He was elected to AAAS and NAS in 1985. He was President of the Bernoulli Society in 1991. He was awared the 2018 Samuel S. Wilks Memorial Award for his work on statistical theory and applications.
