The general outward motion of galaxies resulting from the uniform expansion of the Universe. All motions lie in a radial direction from the observer, and the velocities are proportional to the distance of the galaxies. The real pattern of galaxy motions is not exactly of this form, particularly close to us, because of the mutual gravitational interaction between galaxies; some nearby galaxies are even moving towards the Milky Way. At large distances, however, the discrepancies are small compared with the Hubble flow.
